Due to this fact, USPS has come out with the ‘Dog Bite Prevention Week’ program with the help of which the Post Office tries to educate people about how to protect from the dog attack and dog bite. As observed there are many things that a person can do in their home as well as in their locality to prevent the dog bites. Hence in this article, we have come up with all the processes and initiatives that USPS has taken to prevent the dog attack and dog bites.
The Common Health Problem in the United States :
In the US, dog bites are a major common health program and according to the report of a various organization such as the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), The American Veterinary Medical Association (AMVA), the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) children, elderly and the postal service carrier becomes the main victim of a dog bite in the country. This made the postal service to organize a health awareness program every year in the month of May via National Dog Bite Prevention Week.
Though every year this National Dog Bite Prevention Week in the month of May last year it was decided to organize this program in the month of April. Hence from onwards, National Dog Bite Prevention Week will be organized in April. The National Dog Bite Prevention Week is a public service campaign in which various kinds of safety tips is taught to the people of the United States. Apart from that, this campaign also highlights the requirement for increased pet owner’s responsibility to prevent the dog bites. As per a report it was found that the cases of measles, mumps and whooping cough have been increased to a great extent throughout the US due to the dog bites. Among all the victims of the dog bites, nearly 5 percent of people become so serious that they need to visit the emergency room.
In a news conference held at Houston, the Safety Director of USPS Linda DeCarlo announced that their 77 postal carriers had already suffered dog bites and it is the highest number of incidents found in the country. He further declared that the dog’s bite can be prevented and it is possible to save the postal carrier if the owner of the dog takes a little preventive measure. That is why he urges every pet owner to come forward to join this campaign and understand what they need to do for preventing the dog bites.
An organization like USPS, The AVMA and State Farm Insurance created the campaign The National Dog Bite Prevention Week with an aim to protect the important bond that exists in between the people and their dogs. But creating a campaign will not be effective until and unless you educate the people about the dog bites and make the dog owners aware of their responsibility towards their pet. Hence the main focus of this program is to educate the people about how to prevent themselves from the dog bite.
According to a report, the total population of dogs in the United States household is estimated to be 70 million and several millions of people especially children becomes the victim of dogs every year. But these bites can be prevented if there is a little bit of awareness among the people.

- According to the report of US Postal Service, it is recorded that dogs bite 6244 employees of the post office in the year 2017. Apart from these employees, many children and elderly people were also the victims of the dog bites that year.
- According to the estimation of the Insurance Information Institute in 2017 insurers all over the United States have already paid an amount of $700 million due to the claim that is mainly associated with the dog bites.
- According to the report of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons about 29000 reconstructive measures were taken in 2016 for covering injuries that are caused due to dogs.
What Can be Done for Preventing a Dog Bite?
You can prevent a dog bite by several measures such as by implementing socialization, making the pet owners responsible for taking the ownership, educating people about how to approach dogs, and how to avoid risky situations.
